General Scope and Summary


SAGE Therapeutics is searching for a creative, resourceful, integrative thinker for a highly visible role that is responsible for the development, coordination and execution of epidemiology/ pharmaco-epidemiology strategy across programs and throughout all phases of product lifecycle. The Director of Epidemiology has subject matter expertise in general epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology methods and will advise development and post-marketing programs regarding focus disease populations, epidemiologic query support, and execution of outcomes research studies across the portfolio.  

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Perform critical appraisal and synthesis of relevant epidemiological literature, including to support exploration of new disease areas
  • Provide strategic epidemiologic input into development plans across product lifecycle
  • Provide subject matter expertise, guidance and direction to internal and external stakeholders
  • Lead epidemiologic literature searches as well as support analyses of epidemiologic data sets to aid business planning, ad hoc queries, and aggregate reports 
  • Ensure oversight of observational studies to describe and quantify disease epidemiology and real-world usage, and effectiveness
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry best practices in epidemiology and recognized as internal expert and go-to person
  • Collaborate on Global Value Dossier, Value Proposition, and Pharmacoeconomic model development
  • Collaborate with Publication team to align and support global publication strategy and dissemination of research findings at conferences and peer review journals
  • Assist in the development and establishment of processes and procedures to maximize HEOR and epi operational excellence
  • Identify, select, establish and manage a global network of contractors, consultants, and CROs to execute planned epi deliverables
  • Develop and maintain a strong network of professional contacts

Experience, Education and Specialized Knowledge and Skills


Must thrive working in a fast-paced, innovative environment while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient.  Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders, good conflict management and negotiation skills, ability to analyze complex issues to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs and recommendations.  Demonstrated ability to translate strategy into action; excellent analytical skills and an ability to communicate complex issues in a simple way and to orchestrate plans to resolve issues and mitigate risks.

  • At least 5 years’ experience in pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry, CRO, or drug development company in HEOR, epidemiology, or similar function
  • PhD in epidemiology is strongly preferred, at least a Masters level degree required
  • Excellent analytical skills, including in-depth knowledge of epidemiology methodologies; experience in aspects of health economic analyses preferred
  • Broad experience with a range of US and international public and commercial epidemiologic databases
  • Experience in providing subject matter expert support to Commercial for long range planning and business development exercises preferred
  • Experience working with all levels of management and consulting with key business stakeholders. An ability to influence for greater outcomes
  • Strong team player that has a customer service approach and is solution oriented.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work individually, within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as with external partners and vendors
  • Experience in managing multiple projects across a variety of therapeutic areas
  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills
